That still may not be enough to save AMC Theaters, which has a looming bill it may not be able to pay back. AMC (AMC) also saw its highest quarterly attendance since 2019. The quarter did not include revenue from “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” July releases, which AMC said lifted the company to its best month in its 103-year history. Still, the financial toll of the pandemic has been immense, and is still weighing down AMC and other movie theater chains. AMC took on a significant amount of debt to stay afloat during the pandemic when theaters closed and customers were at home watching Netflix.

Regal cinemas owner Cineworld emerges from bankruptcy

London CNN —The owner of Regal cinemas announced Tuesday that it had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after slashing billions off its debts, just as smash hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” give the movie theater industry a much-needed lift. “Cineworld is ready and fully able to succeed in this dynamic and constantly changing movie theater industry,” chairman Eric Foss said in a statement. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Cineworld struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic, when it, along with other cinema chains, was forced to close its movie theaters worldwide. But whether the summer blockbusters will translate into a sustained revival for movie theaters remains to be seen.

Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” took in about $24 million at the weekend box office, a comatose result for a movie that cost at least $200 million to make and market. Competition was also fierce: “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) collected an astounding $93 million in its second weekend, easily claiming first place, while “Oppenheimer” (Universal) racked up about $46.2 million. “Barbie” has now collected more than $750 million worldwide, according to Comscore, which compiles box office data. But “Haunted Mansion” also had the unfortunate distinction of becoming the first big-budget movie to get sideswiped by the Hollywood actors’ strike, which is now in its third week. No red carpet appearances, no social media posts, no interviews on morning news shows and no participation in newspaper or magazine articles.

AMC (AMC), the world’s largest movie theater chain, said last week that 60,000 people had bought tickets see both films on the same day. Cineworld, the world’s second-biggest movie theater chain and owner of Regal Cinemas, filed for bankruptcy in September after posting a total $3.3 billion loss over 2020 and 2021. CNN —For Hollywood, 2023 will be remembered as a cruel summer, a dead reckoning of a different kind. The summer’s ostentatious setbacks for studios have included “The Flash” (released by Warner Bros., like CNN, a unit of Warner Bros. The asterisk – and it’s a big one – is that the guilds know precious little about the economic specifics of the streaming business, which aren’t widely shared. Actors and writers who once counted on residual payments could see TV ratings and box-office tallies. Because projects are produced far in advance, consumers won’t see the broader consequences of these strikes for a while.

CNN —The Walt Disney Company’s board has unanimously voted to extend CEO Bob Iger’s contract through the end of 2026 — an extension of two years. “Because I want to ensure Disney is strongly positioned when my successor takes the helm, I have agreed to the Board’s request to remain CEO for an additional two years,” he said. In 2020, Bob Chapek, the company’s former chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, was named CEO after Iger unexpectedly announced his retirement. In November 2022, Chapek was ousted just months after signing onto a new three-year contract with Disney, and Iger stepped back into the role as CEO. Claims online that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis became “furious” after his wife admitted their daughter watches Disney’s “Frozen” every day originated as satire, although some social media users were apparently duped into thinking they are real. Bryan Griffin, press secretary for DeSantis’ political team, told Reuters the claim is false. Reuters has previously debunked satirical claims taken seriously that stemmed from this account (here), (here), (here). There is no evidence that Casey DeSantis said their daughter watches “Frozen” every day (tinyurl.com/26ue8dst). This article was produced by the Reuters Fact Check team.

CNN —Disney just cast Ron DeSantis as the villain in a story of good versus evil. DeSantis responded to the lawsuit by issuing a statement through his communications director, Taryn Fenske. “It’s a serious First Amendment case,” Floyd Abrams, the renowned First Amendment attorney of Pentagon Papers fame, told me. The truth is that characterizing Disney as a creepy company that aims to morally bankrupt kids has become a mainstream position in GOP media circles. DeSantis knows this — which is why he was happy to pick this battle with the company.
It will not work,” said Martin Garcia, chairman of the DeSantis-picked Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board of supervisors. Wednesday’s moves are the latest escalation in the fight between DeSantis and Disney as DeSantis moves toward a 2024 presidential bid. Disney responded by suing DeSantis, the board and Florida Department of Economic Opportunity acting secretary Meredith Ivey, seeking to block the board’s moves. But the special district also freed Disney from bureaucratic red tape and made it cheaper to borrow to finance infrastructure projects around its theme parks, among other significant advantages. DeSantis then targeted Disney’s special governing powers.
“It really is shameful what Disney tried to do,” board chairman Martin Garcia said. However, Disney in February reached agreements with the outgoing board that seemed to render the body powerless to control the entertainment giant. Garcia said that the agreements went unmentioned by a representative for Disney when the two sides met soon after DeSantis appointed the new board. “Our board truly wished to work with Disney,” Garcia said. The board plans to vote at its April 26 meeting to void the previous agreements reached with Disney.
New York CNN —Bob Iger’s vision for Disney is coming into greater focus. The CEO touched on a broad range of subjects, including Disney+, Marvel, “Star Wars,” and Hulu, among others. “We’re going to turn back to the Avengers franchise, but with a whole set of different Avengers,” Iger said. ► Imperative to be “very careful” with “Star Wars”: Iger said that the company is also being “very careful” in its approach to the “Star Wars” franchise. “In our zeal to grow profits, we may have been a little bit too aggressive about some of our pricing,” Iger said.

In their 43rd year, the Razzies deliver some tough love to movies, screenplays, directors and more with critical jabs meant to offer a humorous counterpoint to the Oscars. "Blonde" received a Razzie nomination for worst picture, two nominations for worst supporting actors, two for worst screen couples, as well as nods for worst remake, worst director and worst screenplay. Director Andrew Dominik and Netflix already have faced harsh judgment for what critics called a sexist and cruel depiction of Monroe, who was portrayed by Ana De Armas.

Sixteen of the 77 films released by those studios (20.8%) featured 28 LGBTQ characters, the report found. That percentage is down slightly from 2020, during which 10 of the 44 theatrical releases (23%) featured 20 LGBTQ characters, according to the report. Of the 16 films that included LGBTQ characters in 2021, 11 films (69%) included gay male characters, four (25%) included lesbian characters and two (13%) included bisexual characters, according to the report. For the second year in a row, GLAAD found that there were zero LGBTQ characters with disabilities or LGBTQ characters living with HIV represented in the year’s films. The majority of the 28 characters, 17, received fewer than five minutes, and six of those characters received less than a minute of screen time.
